With a starring role in Arrow and Birds of Prey and the upcoming HBO spin-off Max in the works, Black Canary has become one of DC's most recognizable characters. Artist Otto Schmidt, who worked on both Hawkeye: Freefall for Marvel and Green Arrow for DC, has produced an epic collage of around 60 different outfits for the hero, both in the comics and in other media.

As with many superheroes, a number of people have carried the torch throughout the character's long history. In this case, the "Black Canary" moniker was passed from Justice Society member Dina Drake (created by Robert Kaniger and Carmine Infantino in 1947) to her daughter, Dina Drake Lance (created by Dennis O'Neill and Dick Dillin in 1969) . While the two ladies master many forms of hand-to-hand combat, the second black canary is a dead man whose "weeping canary" can confuse enemies and crush hard objects. Whichever version of the character is more popular, Schmidt's art is sure to remind fans why they love DC's premier ultrasonic martial artist.

Otto Schmidt originally shared this incredible piece of art on Twitter last year. With over 74 years of comics and countless adaptations, the elements of the character have changed and evolved, though some recurring motifs can be seen in Schmidt's collage: blonde hair, black choker, domino mask, leather jacket, and of course the special fishnet she has of socks. A number of costumes also feature yellow accents on her boots, arms, and torso, although new versions of the character prefer dark colors to aid her in her nightly crime-fighting adventures alongside Green. Arrow. The artwork also features some variations of the character from traditional comic book continuity, including his appearance as Green Lantern in deceased, as well as his outfit as Black Canary from DC Zoom: Ignite, a reimagining of the character for a younger audience. Another notable costume was from DC Bombshells, a collection of comics and merchandise that reinvents DC's leading ladies as 1940s pin-up models.

Schmidt also drew inspiration from live-action adaptations of the character, including the costumes worn by Rachel Skarsten in the 2002 TV series Birds of Prey, Alaina Huffman for Smallville, and Juliana Harkavy and Katie Cassidy for Arrow. Near the end of the bottom, the row is a costume worn by Jurnee Smollett throughout Birds of Prey, although Schmidt did not include the new costume that was revealed at the climax of the film. It remains to be seen if the next Black Canary sub-version will be inspired by any of the outfits shown here, or if writer Misha Green's depiction of the character will offer something completely different.

Comic books are nothing without their fans, and it's always a pleasure to see professional artists pay detailed and loving tributes to their favorite heroes. While Black Canary is best known for his partnership (both professional and romantic) with Green Arrow, as well as his affiliation with the Justice League and Birds of Prey, Otto Schmidt's work proves that he has his own rich and diverse legacy - and one that is sure to grow in the months and years to come.
